The rise of voice-based search

Thanks to mobile devices that respond to spoken search requests and the rise of devices like Amazon Alexa and Google Home, more people are raising their voices to find what they want instead of using a keyboard.

It’s estimated that by 2020, half of all searches will use voice and 30% of searchers won’t use a screen to find what they seek.

Thus optimizing your web site for voice search is increasingly important. Already smart speakers await voice commands in an estimated 118 million U.S. homes and, according to Voicebot, one billion devices worldwide can use voice-assist technology today. Because most of these devices are mobile phones, voice search is particularly impactful on location-based searches.

Hey Google, how do I optimize content for voice searches?

Preparing your web site for the voices clamoring to find your products and services is complicated, but here are some easy techniques to improve voice search results.

Optimize for local. Mobile devices are often used to find business locations. Since these devices are the most widely used for voice-initiated searches, ensure your site is optimized for local search. This could mean, for example, creating a page for each of your physical locations.

Include FAQs in your content. Keep your answers brief: shorter answers from voice assistants are rated as higher quality by voice assistant users.

Use conversational questions. Since people phrase questions conversationally, content should be optimized for full questions, like “How important is voice search today?” Keep answers under 60 characters to help your voice optimization score.

Design content for search engine snippets. Markup questions as H2 subheads and they’ll be more likely to be indexed and given higher relevancy scores.
